Reading and Writing Tuition

Specific exercises are used to continually push reading accuracy, sped and comprehension. Spelling and writing skills are practiced in every session. Great care is taken to avoid failure and to celebrate success.

Key to the success of the tuition I offer is my ability to build an empathetic rapport with children, young people and adults who experience dyslexic type difficulties.

I use Sound Reading System, a linguistic phonic scheme based on scientific research into effective methods of teaching literacy.

  • It is highly acclaimed and very effective
  • It shows precisely how our complex writing system works
  • It teaches in easily grasped incremental steps
  • It plays to the strengths and strengthens the weaknesses of the dyslexic learner
  • It trains the vital phonological sub-skills needed for efficient reading and writing
  • It is multi-sensory
  • Numeracy and Maths Tuition

Tuition sessions are held once per week and last for 50 to 60 minutes. Follow on exercises and tasks are set. Please enquire about intensive courses which can be arranged during the school holidays

The numeracy and mathematics tuition I offer is geared to the needs of the learner with dyslexia and /or dyscalculia.

  • It is Multi-sensory
  • Uses movement and rhythm to help memory
  • Avoids over dependence on memorising procedures and processes
  • Builds an understanding of numbers and how they work
  • Teaches in small incremental steps that can be easily grasped
  • Builds confidence by avoiding failure
  • Therapy

My training as a Neuro-Develpmental Therapist has led to a particular interest in the neuro-biology of reading and dyslexia, and into the efficacy of using movement to aid learning.

I am trained as a Neuro-Developmental Therapist (INPP) and when appropriate Neuro-Developmental Therapy and/or Balance Therapy can be incorporated into tuition sessions.

Neuro-Developmental Therapy and/or Balance Therapy can be helpful if there is a significant difficulty with one or more of the following:

  • Gross motor movement skills
  • Fine Motor Movement skills
  • Balance
  • Sequencing of movements
  • Attention difficulties: ADD/ADHD
  • Assessments

Please contact me to discuss the pros and cons of having an assessment carried out and to clarify your assessment needs.

Please contact the centre for advice about assessments for dyslexia.

    Talks and Training

I have experience of organising and running CPD events for teachers and of giving public talks.

I am an experienced public speaker and I'm always happy to gives talks to raise awareness of dyslexia and/or linguistic phonics.

I offer a range of training events on Linguistic Phonics, the system of tuition I use successfully at Kingswood learning. Training events are best tailored to individual needs. The method lends itself to both the initial teaching of reading and writing and to the remediation of reading difficulties. My main area of interest and expertise is with the latter, and how to meet the specific difficulties of the dyslexic learner.

Please contact me to discuss your training requirements.

    Contact

I was severely dyslexic and only learned to read when in my teens. This personal experience of dyslexia gives me a good understanding of the difficulties faced by the people I tutor.
